Union Govt misleading public on Mekedat issue: Anbumani
Chairman of PMK Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss said on Tuesday that the Union government’s new stand on Mekedat, expressed by Foreign Minister Jal Shakti Raj Bhushan Choudhary on Monday, showed that “there is a vast conspiracy going on to deny the Tamil government Cauvery water and that the Union government itself is complicit in all the cons of the Tamil government”. meeting of managers to discuss the problem.
He said in a statement that both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress have always acted against the interests of Tamil Nadu on the Cauvery issue. “It was a mistake for the BJP-led Union government to give approval for a detailed report on the Mekedatu dam project in 2018. The Congress leadership failed to condemn the betrayal of Tamil Nadu. Now they are continuing on the same path, the BJP-led union government and the Congress government in Karnataka are jointly exposing another conspiracy against Tamils and another conspiracy must be defeated. This conspiracy must be defeated.
Dr. Anbumani further said that MoS Choudhury had selectively quoted a portion of the Supreme Court judgment dated February 16, 2018 to create an impression that Tamil Nadu had no right on the Cauvery water issue. While the enactment of the 1947 Act ensured that the doctrine of overriding power ceased to apply, the agreements of 1892 and 1924 between the Madras Presidency and the Mysore State were not political.
“These agreements have not become defunct or gone completely. Karnataka cannot build any dam without the consent of Tamil Nadu, the downstream riparian state. By concealing this fact and claiming that Tamil Nadu’s consent is unnecessary for the construction of the Mekedatu Dam, the Union government is deliberately misleading the public,” he charged.
