Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Mysuru, successfully performed the Unicorn procedure on a 73-year-old cardiac patient.
According to the hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr. KS Sadananda’s procedure performed on Kamalamma Marigowda is the fourth Unicorn procedure performed in Karnataka and the first at Jayadeva Hospital, making it a major milestone for the institution.
Here it is stated that the procedure was performed by a team led by Dr. Harshabasappa and Dr. Shrinidhi Heggade.
The patient, Kamalamma Marigowda, a resident of Goralli village in Periyapatna taluk, was not suitable for open heart surgery. Doctors therefore opted for the highly advanced and rare Unicorn technique, which is used in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) to prevent the potentially fatal blockage of the coronary arteries that can occur during valve replacement, the statement said.
On this occasion Dr. Harshabasappa said another comprehensive TAVI procedure was successfully performed on the same day on 73-year-old S. Siddaraj of Anasale village in Malavalli taluk.
Mr. Siddaraju had severe aortic valve calcification and developed a rare complication known as frozen leaflet after an artificial valve was implanted. The medical team immediately resolved the problem by manipulating the catheter, avoiding the need for surgery, the statement said.
Dr. Harshabasappa said the successful performance of two highly complex TAVI procedures on the same day shows that the Mysuru unit at Jayadeva Hospital is fully equipped to provide world-class structural cardiac interventions, the statement added.
