Ukraine Must be Part of Peace Talks, Says Trudeau in Call with Zelenskyy
Ottawa, Canada – Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the importance of including Ukraine in any future peace talks with Russia, during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
The conversation came as tensions escalate between Ukraine and Russia, with the latter’s military buildup along the border and recent annexation of Crimea in 2014 still fresh on the minds of international leaders. Trudeau and Zelenskyy discussed the need for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, with Canada reaffirming its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"We believe that Ukraine must be a central player in any dialogue aimed at resolving the conflict, and we urge Russia to take concrete steps towards de-escalation," Trudeau said. "As we’ve seen in the past, attempts to exclude Ukraine from the negotiating table have only led to further conflict and instability in the region."
Zelenskyy echoed Trudeau’s sentiments, stating that "Ukraine’s participation is crucial for any meaningful peace process" and that "our sovereignty and integrity are non-negotiable." He also expressed gratitude for Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the country’s military aid, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic mediation efforts.
Canada has been a vocal advocate for Ukraine’s cause, having provided millions of dollars in assistance and support to help Ukraine strengthen its military and bolster its economy. Trudeau’s government has also led international efforts to impose sanctions on Russian officials and entities involved in the annexation of Crimea.
The phone call between Trudeau and Zelenskyy follows a recent meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during which Blinken reiterated the US’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The international community is closely watching the situation, with many calling for a diplomatic solution to prevent further escalation and restore stability to the region. Canada, along with other Western democracies, has consistently emphasized the need for a united approach to addressing the crisis, with Ukraine’s participation and leadership at the forefront of any negotiations.
As tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to simmer, the need for inclusive and forward-thinking diplomacy has never been more pressing. Canada and its international partners remain committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to maintain its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and economic prosperity, and to finding a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
In a statement, Trudeau’s office said, "Canada will continue to work with like-minded nations to advance a united approach to addressing the crisis, and to support Ukraine’s efforts to restore stability and security in the region."
