UK Airports Cyber Attack: Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands Customer Data Accessed; passenger safety intact

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which operates three major UK airports, has confirmed that an unauthorized third party gained access to a large amount of customer data as part of a cyber security incident.

The breach affected information associated with car park, lounge and Fast Track bookings, as well as airport Wi-Fi registrations at Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports.

MAG said it moved quickly to contain the incident and is working with specialist advisers and relevant authorities.

What customer data was accessed?

According to MAG, compromised information includes:

-Customer email addresses

– Vehicle registration numbers

The airport operator stressed that bank and payment details were not disclosed.

“Neither MAG nor the system it subscribed to stores customer banking or payment information,” the company said.

MAG also said it was taking steps to protect customers and its systems following the incident.

Passenger safety and airport operations unaffected

Despite the cyber security breach, MAG said there was no impact on passenger safety or aviation security.

“At no time was passenger safety or aviation safety compromised,” the company said.

The incident also did not cause any operational disruption at the three airports.

“Airport operations remain unaffected and customer parking services continue to operate as normal,” MAG said.

The authorities informed

MAG said it has informed the relevant authorities and is working with them to resolve the incident.

The operator said it immediately contained the risk and is working with professional advisors to protect its customers and systems.

The company also apologized to customers for any concern or inconvenience caused by the breach.

“We would like to reassure customers that Manchester Airport Group takes the security of customer information extremely seriously,” he told MAG.

Affected airports are used by millions of passengers

According to the Independent newspaper, these three airports together handle tens of millions of passengers annually.

Manchester Airport has seen more than 32 million passengers in the last 12 months, while Stansted Airport handled more than 30 million passengers. East Midlands Airport saw around 4 million passengers in the same period, according to figures cited by The Independent.
