Following farmers’ protest, the management of the Ugar Sugar Mill in Belagavi district on Tuesday agreed to implement the government’s order to pay ₹3,300 per tonne of sugarcane.
On Monday, the management of Ugar Sugar Works Limited issued an announcement that they will pay ₹3,250 per tonne of sugarcane instead of the ₹3,300 fixed by the state government.
When the farmers, led by Shashikath Guruji, came to know about this, they staged a huge protest outside the sugar mill and called on the management to withdraw the decision immediately and pay the farmers as per the government order.
Addressing the protesting farmers, Shashikanth Guruji warned the management of possible consequences if they stick to their stand and refuse to pay as per the government order.
As the agitation intensified, the mill management relented and announced that they would pay ₹3,300 as stipulated by the state government, following which the farmers withdrew their protest.
