UEFA Champions League: Arsenal face PSG with European glory and history on the line

As European club football reaches its peak at Budapest’s Pusks Arna, Arsenal and PSG are one match away from immortality.

After ending a 22-year wait for a Premier League title, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are chasing the one trophy that has long eluded the club – the UEFA Champions League. Standing in their way are defending champions PSG, led by Luis Enrique, who are looking to become the first team since Real Madrid to successfully defend their title.

Arsenal have dominated Europe this season, arriving in Budapest unbeaten and boasting one of the best defensive records in the competition. Meanwhile, PSG have taken French football by storm once again, winning a fifth straight Ligue 1 title and continuing to impress Enrique with a high-intensity, possession-based style.

THE WAY TO THE FINALS

Arsenal reached their first Champions League final in 20 years was built on consistency and defensive strength. The Gunners dominated the league stage after winning all eight games and conceding just four goals.

They then beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, beat Sporting CP 1-0 in the quarter-finals and beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 over two legs in the semi-finals.

PSG’s journey was far more dramatic. After finishing 11th in the league stage and entering the play-offs, they went through a series of difficult knockout battles.

The French champions beat Monaco 5-4 on aggregate before dismantling Chelsea 8-2 in the round of 16. Liverpool were swept 4-0 in the quarter-finals, while PSG survived a thrilling 6-5 aggregate semi-final victory over Bayern Munich to book your place in Budapest.

The stakes could hardly be higher. Arsenal are aiming for the first Champions League title in the club’s history and could become only the third English club in the modern era to complete the Premier League and Champions League double.

“When you taste winning and lifting the trophy, you know how nice it is,” Arsenal captain Martin Ôdegaard said before the final. “And we want to do it again.

PSG, meanwhile, are looking to become the first team since Real Madrid to successfully defend their Champions League crown and further cement their status as Europe’s dominant force.

Arteta added: “They are defending the trophy, they are the champions and we are here to take it from them.”

HEAD TO HEAD

The two clubs have met five times in European competition, with PSG having the upper hand in recent matches. Their last meeting came in last season’s semi-finals, where the French side won both legs, triumphing 1-0 at the Emirates and 2-1 at the Parc des Princes.
