The United Democratic Front (UDF) gave a major setback to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and secured a clear majority in the Kannur Corporation by winning 36 of the 56 constituencies.
In Kannur Corporation, where 1,35,780 out of a total of 1,93,079 voters cast their votes, the LDF finished a distant second with 14 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won four seats. Apart from retaining Pallikunnu ward, the NDA also won Kokkenpara, Thulicheri and Temple wards. Congress lost Thulicheri and Temple wards to BJP.
Compared to the previous elections, the UDF improved from 34 to 36 seats, while the LDF’s strength declined from 19 to 15 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) increased its representation by three seats. Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) also secured one seat from Arakkal ward.
Several top ldf leaders suffered defeats. PK ragesh Lost from Panikkar, former state sports council president ok Vinesh was defeated in Thalkkavu and former standing committee chairperson Kp Sabira Lost from Aarakal.
Meanwhile, three rebel candidates contesting against the UDF in Payyambalam (KN Bindu), Varam (KV Riyas) and Adikadalaya (V. Muhammadali) were defeated, further consolidating the UDF’s position in the Corporation.
After the victory, UDF workers celebrated in key parts of the city, shooting firecrackers and holding victory marches. UDF convener PT Mathew, DCC president Martin George, IUML district president Abdul Kareem Cheleri and former mayor Muslih Madathil led the victory procession in an open vehicle along with the elected candidates and greeted the public. Party workers participated in large numbers, carrying flags and banners.
