The united Democratic Front (UDF) called Hartal in three idukki Panchayats against the government’s attitude to construction works on the National Motorway Kochi-Dhanushkodi (NH-85).
The UDF leaders said Hartal, Velhaoval and Pallivasal Panchayats, would be observed on Saturday.
Dean Kuriakos, a deputy, said that the Kera High Court issued an order on Friday, which remained on the road at 14.5 km Neriamangalam, Vara and Adimaly Stretch, who is at the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway.
Mr. Kuriakose stated that the court issued an order based on the environmentalist’s petition based in Idukki Mn Jayacandran. He claimed that the forest department and the government support Mr. Jayacandran, who was the leader of the BJP.
According to Mr. Kuriakos, the development of roads on the route of Neriamangalam was the main demand of people in the district. “In May 2024, the High Court ordered that the forest department should not interfere with the road work. Now the construction activities in the section are blocked in another way,” Kuriakos said.
Idukki Land Freedom Movement Conventner Dias Pullan claimed that another main secretary filed an affidavit before the High Court in this case and stated that the area was a forest soil. “The honorary statement was presented on behalf of the main secretary. The state government is responsible for a court judgment,” he said.
“The forest department was behind environmental organizations that filed a case at the High Court to block road construction,” Mr. Pullan said.
