FC Barcelona starboy Lamine Yamal was delighted with the team’s win against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday 28 January. Barcelona overcame a 0–1 deficit in the second half to win the match 4–1 and secure a place in the top five of the league stage.
The result secured Barcelona direct entry into the main draw of the next round and allowed them to avoid the play-offs. After the match, Yamal praised the character shown by the team and said the new Champions League format suited the players as it reduced the number of games in an already crowded season.
“We all came here tonight thinking about getting into the top eight. We’re very happy with the win,” the 18-year-old told Movistar Plus.
“When you concede a goal in the Champions League it’s very difficult to come back, but the team was very resilient and managed to turn it around. With the number of games we’ll play in the season, you have two games less and you’ll feel a lot better.”
Barcelona vs Copenhagen: Highlights
Despite the convincing scoreline, Barcelona were made to work hard after a frustrating first half in which Copenhagen stunned the visitors with an early lead.
The visitors silenced the home crowd when Dadason broke free from Barcelona’s high defensive line, latched on to the defense from Mohamed Elyounoussi before firing a low finish past goalkeeper Garcia.
The goal visibly unsettled Barcelona, who struggled to find a rhythm before the break. Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski both missed chances to equalise, while Eric Garcia came closest in the 33rd minute when his powerful effort hit the crossbar.
Barcelona emerged much more fired up after the break and leveled the game within three minutes of the restart. Lamine Yamal led a quick counter-attack, slipping past several Copenhagen defenders before heading the ball to Lewandowski, who crashed into the unguarded net.
The equalizing goal changed the pace sharply. Barcelona upped the ante and pinned Copenhagen deep in their own half before eventually taking the lead after an hour. Yamal struck from inside, his shot deflected, looped over goalkeeper Diant Ramaj Kotarski and into the far corner.
Raphinha extended the advantage from the penalty spot in the 69th minute after Lewandowski was brought down as he attempted a shot, and substitute Marcus Rashford later disputed the result with an equaliser.
While Barcelona’s second-half response was merciless, defensive concerns remain. The Catalans finished the league stage without a clean sheet and finished with the weakest defensive record among the top 13 teams.
