In terms of increasing green spaces in Bengalur and encouragement of people to grow their own vegetables in any limited spaces they have, the University of Agricultural Sciences-Bengalur (UAS-B) embarked on an initiative to support urban gardening/horticulture.
While the university has launched a paid short -term course in urban gardening, it also plans to offer consulting services in the coming days based on the availability of space and a specific requirement of house owners.
Twofold Benefit
“We want to encourage residents to grow their own vegetables. University experts will help them understand how the family of three to four people can ensure regular availability of vegetables. We also want residents to transform their wet waste into compost.
He pointed out that the unbeaped empty land became a problem for the neighborhood due to the growth of shrubs and the ejection of garbage and said, “With the consent of landowners, the neighborhood can use this space for growing vegetables”.
He added: “We also want children in urban families to get first -hand exposure to growing plants. It is a question that several urban children do not have a practical idea of plants or cultivation, but for reading them in lessons.”
The two -day course will provide participants in the general aspects of urban horticulture, vertical gardening, internal plants, composting, a mixture of pots to be prepared, and manipulation with plant diseases/pests, noted.
Kit must be secured
The university would also provide a set with cultural material for composting, red soil and pots to those who take a short -term course if they want to buy them.
He said that even those who have limited open spaces such as apartments can practice urban horticulture. There are several varieties of inner plants that could also be grown in the house, he emphasized.
Over time, the university wants to design specific models of urban gardening through consultations for people depending on their availability of space. Models would include vertical gardening structures and hydroponics, he explained.
Workshop for architects
In several cases, however, agriculture in terraces should be restricted due to various restrictions related to construction, as the lack of measures for Vodočaty can lead to leakage, stressed the vice -chairman. In this context, the university decided to start organizing workshops for architects to give them orientation on preliminary requirements with regard to the construction of the building to facilitate the terrace/urban gardening, he said.
Meanwhile, since Friday, a two -day workshop on urban gardening has been charged, for which 2,000 GBP is charged per person for whom the participants have already been selected. It is planned to organize such workshops once a month.
The annual Krishi Mel (Agricultural Fair) UAS-B is not only among farmers, but also among the city inhabitants. Given that a large number of inhabitants of cities began to visit these molasses, the university began to introduce concepts of urban horticulture in grinding and now trying to further promote it.
