Two workers at the Konavaikal water service station near Bhavani in the Erode district died of suffocation when cleaning an empty chemical freight tank, which previously transported clayide aluminum, on Sunday (March 30, 2025).
The police identified victims as Chandran, 62, and Yuganandan, 50, both of the Palakattur. Another worker, Chellappan, 52 years old, from Chithoda, who also experienced suffocation, was saved and admitted to the hospital.
According to the police, a truck transported chemicals from Hyderabad to a coloring company in Tiruppur, where it is used in wastewater treatment plants to remove suspended solids and improve water quality. Upon returning, the driver took Sundaraja (48) from the Tirunelvel district to Sri Bharani Service Center, where three workers entered the tanker to clean it. All three, however, lost consciousness, which caused the reaction to emergency situations of fire and rescue service staff in Bhavan.
Rescue staff, wearing safety equipment, entered the tank and gained workers. Chandran and Yuganandan did not survive and their bodies were sent to the Erode Medical College and the Hospital in Perundurai. Chellappan was admitted to the government hospital in Bhavan and his condition is considered critical.
Police are investigating the incident.
