Two quacks were arrested on Saturday for prescribing and treating patients at their dispensary clinic near Tirupattur town.

Health officials said the arrested quacks were K. Elango (68) and S. Santhosh (36). Elango completed his graduation in nursing while Santhosh had a diploma in nursing. Those arrested in recent years were offering medical care to patients in nearby villages near Tirupattur town without professional qualifications. They converted their rented house into a clinic and pharmacy for patients in a remote village. On average, 35-50 patients are waiting for treatment at the clinics every day.

A special medical team led by V. Gnana Meenakshi, Joint Director of Health Services, inspected the house following complaints from residents. The medical team included a doctor, a pharmacist and a drug inspector.

During the search, paramedics found a lot of used medical equipment, prescriptions and letterhead at the clinic.

The clinic and pharmacy were sealed. The team also seized medical equipment. A case was registered by the Tirupattur Taluk police before the duo was lodged in a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
