Two police inspectors were charged with illegal detention, alleged extortion

The State Human Rights Commission police department on Tuesday raided two police inspectors attached to RMC Yard police station and Kothanur police station after they were allegedly found to be illegally detaining two persons, including a city jeweller, without registering an FIR and demanding money and gold for their release.

Human Rights Commission officials headed by Dy. SP Ashanthnarayana conducted surprise raids at both the police stations around 3 pm on Tuesday and allegedly found the victims in illegal custody.

According to officials, the RMC Yard police station inspector allegedly detained Rajesh Kumar Mehta for two days without registering an FIR. Mehta was allegedly picked up based on the statement of a burglary accused who allegedly told police that he had sold Mehta the stolen valuables.

However, Mehta reportedly denied knowing the accused or buying any stolen gold and even offered CCTV footage to prove his innocence. Despite this, the police reportedly insisted that he hand over one kilogram of gold.

In a separate incident, an inspector of Kothanur police station allegedly detained Fardeen Pasha, an employee of a private firm, for almost three days without any complaint or FIR on the pretext of investigation. The police reportedly demanded ₹5 lakh for his release.

Both victims were later rescued, medically examined and their statements recorded by Human Rights Commission officials.

Cases have reportedly been opened against the two inspectors on allegations of illegal detention, abuse of power and human rights violations. Officials said the two inspectors may be arrested after further investigation.
