Two police constables have been transferred to the armed reserves wing in Ranipet over illegal sand mining in the Palar river

Two police constables attached to the Walajah Police in Ranipet were on Wednesday transferred to the Armed Reserves (AR) wing of the district police for their alleged involvement in illegal sand mining in the dry Palar river.

The constables were identified as K. Sampath Kumar, 38, and V. Manikandan, 26. They had been working as constables in the Law and Order (L&O) wing of the Walajah police for the past few years. Superintendent of Police Ayman Jamal issued an order to transfer the duo to the AR wing of the district police.

Initial investigation revealed that the two had been constructing their own houses on the Anaicut main road near Arcot town in the district for the past few months. They are said to have kept a huge amount of river sand at the construction site for the ongoing work. They were also allegedly involved in illegal sand mining in the Palar River.

Based on complaints from residents, Ranipet SP, Ms. Jamal ordered an inquiry led by G. Sakthi Ganesh, Inspector, Walajah Police. The team found out that the duo was involved in illegal sand mining in the river. They also found a large amount of river sand at the site of the house.

Subsequently, the team reported to the SP. Based on the investigation report, they have been transferred and an investigation is underway.
