Two nurses at AIIMS Bhopal have been booked for allegedly giving a wrong injection, carrying a toxic chemical, to a three-year-old cancer patient who died soon after, police said on Saturday (Jun 13, 2026).
According to the police, the incident took place in December 2025 and that the FIR was filed after an internal investigation by AIIMS found gross negligence on the part of nurses Madhubala Sharma and Anuk Gujarati and that the cause of the child’s death was injection. The AIIMS management suspended both the nurses.
The nurses were booked at Bagsewania Police Station under Sections 106 and 286 of the BNS. While Ms. Sharma allegedly gave the wrong injection, Ms. Gujarati left the toxic injection unattended.
DCP Bhopal Zone 2, Vikas Sehwal told The Hindu that the child was a resident of Sagar district and was admitted to AIIMS for cancer treatment.
“The syringe with the wrong injection was nearby and the nurse put it in the dropper bottle that was given to the child. The child’s family even tried to stop the nurse, but it was too late. It was either formalin or formaldehyde solution, both of which are highly toxic,” he said.
Mr. Sehwal said that although the child was already in a critical condition, he died within an hour of being given the wrong injection.
“The FIR was filed on the basis of an internal probe by AIIMS which found negligence on the part of the two nurses. About 10 days ago, we also took the dropper bottle and sent the samples for testing,” the DCP said.
Siddharth Yadav, the child’s father, said he tried to stop the nurse who took the wrong syringe because “it had an ‘F’ on it.”
“I tried to stop her before she injected it into the IV, but she said, ‘Am I the doctor here or are you?’ My son fell unconscious soon after,” Mr. Yadav said, adding that while his son was shifted to the pediatric ICU, he died soon after.
