US troops arrested a person for allegedly shooting two National Guard members just blocks from the White House in Washington DC on Wednesday. While US President Donald Trump called the suspect an “animal”, the identity of the gunman, arrested after the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, has not yet been identified.
The suspect in the shooting, which took place near the White House, was arrested and taken into custody minutes after the incident. The identities of the two National Guard members have not been released.
The shooting happened about two blocks northwest of the White House near a subway station, the AP reported.
Troopers apprehended the suspect
After hearing the gunfire, other troopers in the area ran over and detained the gunman after he was shot, said Jeffrey Carroll, executive assistant to the D.C. police chief.
“It appears to be a lone gunman who picked up a firearm and ambushed these National Guard members,” Carroll said, adding that it was unclear whether the suspect was shot by one of the Guardsmen or a police officer.
“We have no other suspects at this time,” Carroll said at a news conference.
Trump calls suspect ‘animal’
In a post on TRUTH social media, US President Donald Trump said: “The animal that shot two National Guardsmen, leaving them both critically injured and now in two separate hospitals, is also badly injured, but will pay a very high price regardless.
“God bless our Grand National Guard and all of our military and law enforcement. They are truly great people. I, as the President of the United States and all allies of the office of the President, are with you!” he added.
