Two men killed in mob attack in Siliguri on suspicion of cattle theft
Locals intercepted the van at Tarabari, brutally assaulted the driver and other passengers and set the vehicle on fire
Two men were killed and three others injured in West Bengal’s Siliguri after they were attacked by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft on Sunday (October 4, 2026).
According to police, around 3 am, a group of locals intercepted a van in Siliguri’s Tarabari area and pulled the five passengers out. When they escaped, the locals started chasing them and four of them were captured in the Dhimal Basti area. They were brutally attacked, resulting in one dying on the spot. The rest were badly injured.
The mob also set his van on fire during the altercation.
Another person from the group managed to escape and reach Bagdogra police station. Police soon arrived at the scene and took the victims to the hospital, where another person died.
The driver dies
The two deceased were identified as pick-up driver Md. Shahid Akhtar, 45, a resident of Chopra, Bengal, and his companion Sajjad Mohammed, 28, from Haryana.
Bagdogra police said a first information report was filed against unidentified persons on charges of mob murder, voluntarily causing grievous hurt and damage to property based on a complaint by Mr. Akhtar’s wife.
