Two long awaited projects in Hyderabad are nearing completion; launch is expected next month

Two long-awaited public infrastructure projects being implemented by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) could be launched next month.

One of them is the high level bridge over the Musi at Moosarambagh. Officials said work on one carriageway is nearing completion and is expected to open to traffic next month, partially restoring connectivity that was disrupted after the old causeway was demolished last year. Construction on the remaining roadway will continue even after traffic is permitted on the completed side.

The earlier embankment had worn down considerably due to repeated flooding of the Musi with steel reinforcement at several places, making it unsafe for public use. Although the administrative sanction for the new bridge was given in 2022 as part of the proposed package of 14 Musi bridges, progress has remained slow due to a change in government and re-evaluation of bridge projects. The old causeway was eventually torn down after a structural assessment declared it unsafe for commuters.

While the upstream bridge is still in progress, the downstream bridge that connects Amberpet and Malakpet is 85-90% complete and could be launched in the first week of August, officials say.

Another launch on the horizon is the elevated corridor between Nalgonda Crossroads and Owaisi Hospital Junction, which is under construction at a cost of ₹ 620 crore, including the land acquisition component.

Although approved at a cost of ₹ 523 crore in 2018 before being revised to the current estimate last year, the 2.58 km long flyover has taken a long time to start despite its design incorporating steel components for faster completion.
