Two construction workers were crushed to death and five others were injured, one of them critically, when a newly laid concrete roof slab of an under-construction church on the Tamil Nadu border in Vellore district, near Mandicrishnapuram colony in Gudipala mandal, 24 km away, collapsed on Thursday evening.
Police and fire teams from Chittoor and Gudipala rushed to the spot to help the Tamil Nadu police in the rescue operation. The sudden structural collapse reportedly trapped about five to six construction workers under the heavy debris.
A group of about two dozen workers, mostly from Ranipet and Katpadi in Tamil Nadu, were reportedly involved in the slab work. The support structure reportedly collapsed after concreting was fully completed, burying the workers under rubble.
Chittoor MLA Gurajala Jagan Mohan got his team to rush to the spot and coordinate the rescue operation with Tamil Nadu officials. Chittoor police also deployed two ambulances to take the injured to CMC Hospital in Vellore.
