Two men drowned in Edamalayar, the main tributary of Periyar, in the Palavanpads in Kuttampuzha Panchayat, on Tuesday (April 1, 2025) in the eastern suburb of Ernakula.
The deceased were identified as Siddique, 40, from the Choon in Aluva and his nephew Abu Fayaz, 22, Mattoor in Kalady. The incident occurred around 12:30 and their bodies were restored near the scene by a team of fire and emergency services, which plunged into the place.
The deceased were part of a group of about 20 relatives who came to the river in four vehicles. The men in the group reportedly embarked on to bathe. “The coast is very sandy and the water from the tank is cooler than usual, but with a strong stream. At first Abu caught up in the stream and his uncle, who saved him, was also imprisoned,” Kuttampuzha said.
President Kuttampuzha Panchayat Kanthi Shelakkayan said that Panchayat had built a warning council before wandering into the water because there was more drowning in the past. The group may have ignored it, she added.
