Two days, two centuries missed: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi upset with himself after 96 vs GT

It was heartbreaking for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as he missed out on another hundred during Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans and the RR opener struggled to contain his anger at himself. Sooryavanshi was dismissed in almost similar fashion as he batted on 96 and tried to reach the landmark with a big shot.

But similar to SRH’s game, the ball went high in the air and snagged in the third man region, leading to stunned silence in the stadium. Applause soon followed, but the 15-year-old was beside himself on his way back to the pavilion.

Sooryavanshi started slowly as GT started with a clear plan to target his body. The 15-year-old hit his first boundary in the third over of the innings but was not at his best as RR lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel early on.

He added one more boundary in the same over and found the perfect partner in Ravindra Jadeja who made sure the run rate was up and Sooryavanshi was calm at the other end.

Jadeja and Sooryavanshi added 73 runs before the former had to retire injured. Sooryavanshi again showed bursts of explosiveness here and there but it was a far cry from 97 off 29 balls against SRH.

He got to his fifty of 31 deliveries and that was when he switched to the power bowler. Once Jadeja returned to bat, Sooryavanshi was able to explode in Mullanpur, scoring 46 off 15 balls and racing into the 90s.

The situation looked set for Sooryavanshi to get to his third IPL hundred, but then disaster struck for him and RR.

It also meant that Sooryavanshi tied the undesirable record in the IPL. He became the fifth batsman after KL Rahul, David Warner, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Glenn Maxwell to be dismissed for the third time in the 1990s.
