Cops from the Railway Protection Force arrested two men and seized 6.5 kg of ganja worth ₹ 6.46 lakh at Gadag railway station.
During a special drive under Operation NARCOS, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at Gadag railway station noticed two men in their early 20s sitting on Platform No. 1 with two backpacks and acting suspiciously.
On interrogation, they found that both were residents of Dharwad district. A search of their bags revealed two bundles wrapped in gray and brown tape, suspected to contain dry ganja.
The matter was immediately referred to the Excise Department and the Gadag Range Sub-Inspector of Excise arrived at the station.
On weighing, the seized substance was found to be 6.465 kg of dry ganja worth ₹6,46,500.
After completing all the necessary legal formalities, the smuggled goods were secured and the two accused men were handed over to the excise authorities for further legal action.
The RPF personnel who were in the team that seized the contraband are Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohammed Munaf and Senior Constable MN Kalled.
Since April 2019, the RPF has been empowered to search, detain and arrest offenders under the NDPS Act. He is actively involved in the government’s efforts to curb this illegal trade.
To draw attention to the NDPS menace, an all-India drive against rail narcotics smuggling, codenamed Operation NARCOS, was launched in June 2022.
In this operation, RPF performed well against transporters/carriers of narcotic products through Indian Railways.
The RPF has intensified its checks in trains and at identified black spots across the country in coordination with the NCB and other law enforcement agencies to target drug peddlers involved in this illegal trade.
