MAGICAL FINISHER: MEG LANNING POWERS DELHI CAPITALS TO THRILLING VICTORY IN NAIL-BITING CONTEST
Ahmedabad, March 28, 2025: In a match that will be etched in the memories of fans for a long time, Meg Lanning’s heroic 64* (42b, 5×4, 2×6) earned Delhi Capitals a thrilling two-wicket victory over Warriorz in the 15th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad. The win, which was Delhi’s third consecutive success, took them to 12 points and strengthened their chances of reaching the semi-finals.
Chasing 153 for a win, Delhi stuttered early, slipping to 47 for 4 in the 11th over. Warriorz bowlers, led by Brooke Harris (3 for 26), were on a roll, and at one stage, it seemed like the Capitals were facing an uphill task. However, Lanning, supported by Heena Thacker (22 off 24) and Lea Tahuhu (20 off 17), took the game by the scruff of its neck, guiding Delhi to a heart-stopping victory.
The left-handed batter, who has been in resplendent form this season, showcased her remarkable skills, hitting five fours and two sixes to keep her team’s hopes alive. Her partnership of 43 runs with Thacker turned the game on its head, raising hopes of a Delhi win among the packed stadium.
The Capitals’ victory, their third in the last five matches, came down to the wire, with Lanning and Tahuhu adding 39 runs in the last three overs. The final ball of the match witnessed a thrilling finish, as Lanning slapped a fiery Harris into the stands, securing the victory and sending the Delhi camp into raptures.
"We didn’t win the game we would have liked, but we showed tremendous character and fight to get over the line," a beaming Lanning said in the post-match presentation ceremony. "Heena and Lea were fantastic in their respective roles, and our dressing room is buzzing with positivity."
"We knew we had to dig deep and show our mettle. We could have easily given in, but the team showed great heart and spirit to win the game," Delhi Capitals coach, Jess Jonassen, added. "Meg’s unbeaten half-century was the difference between the two sides. She’s a world-class player, and we’re lucky to have her in our ranks."
For Warriorz, who registered their fifth consecutive defeat, the stinging loss was a bitter pill to swallow. "We got 153, which was a gettable target, but we couldn’t execute our plans with the ball and bat," Warriorz skipper, Shafali Verma, lamented. "We will learn from our mistakes and come back stronger in the next match."
In the end, it was Lanning’s indomitable spirit and the Capitals’ never-say-die attitude that earned them a hard-fought victory in a game that will be etched in the memories of fans for a long time to come.
