Twisha Sharma death case: husband remanded, MP HC allows second autopsy

Samarth Singh, husband of Twisha Sharma, who reportedly ended her life recently, was taken into custody by the Madhya Pradesh police on Friday (May 22, 2026) after absconding for several days in connection with the dowry death and harassment case, officials said. The Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered a second post-mortem on Sharma’s body by a specialist team at AIIMS Delhi.

The case saw a furor on Friday when the state government recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, two days after Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met Sharma’s family.

“In exercise of the powers conferred under Section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Act, 1946, the Government of Madhya Pradesh hereby consents to the extension of the powers and jurisdiction of the members of the Delhi Special Police to the entire State of Madhya Pradesh for the purpose of investigating the above case,” the MP Home Ministry said in a notification.

Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar confirmed Mr Singh’s detention, saying the police would produce him before a court within 24 hours.

“Yes, he (accused Samarth Singh) has been taken into custody and this entire process is being handled by our police team. We have to produce him before the court within 24 hours. So we will produce him within the given time,” the commissioner said.

Mr. Singh, a lawyer, was taken into custody by the Jabalpur police when he arrived at the district court there. His lawyer Jaideep Kaurav said, “He appeared before the Jabalpur district court to surrender, but the court was not available. He was then taken into custody by the Jabalpur police and handed over to the Bhopal police.”

“I don’t have any information about the commotion in the district court. He came to the district court to surrender, but the judge there had already left because the court time was over and the court was not available. The police took him into custody and then handed him over to the Bhopal police. The Bhopal police took him into custody, so there is a chance that he will be produced before the Bhopal court tomorrow. agency.

After hearing a petition filed by Sharma’s father Navnidhi Sharma, Justice Avanindra Kumar Singh said that since the woman died within six months of the marriage, a second post-mortem should be conducted to clear all doubts. It will be held in Bhopal, the court ruled.

“Having considered all the reasons, this court is also of the opinion that by ordering the second post-mortem, neither this court nor the petitioner has directly or indirectly imputed any improper motive or questioned the earlier post-mortem report or anyone else but the death of the deceased occurred within six months of the marriage, therefore, the second post-mortem should be conducted during the marriage, as required by the Director, to clear all doubts, the Director should be conducted in any agreed quarter. AIIMS, New Delhi to assemble a team of experts as soon as possible who can arrive first by a special flight organized by the state government to conduct the post-mortem,” the high court said.

After hearing another petition challenging the anticipatory bail granted to Justice Giribala Singh, mother-in-law of Sharma and an accused in the case, by a local court in Bhopal, the Supreme Court directed her to appear before it on or before May 25.

Ankur Pandey, a lawyer representing Sharma’s family, said that apart from the family, the state government had also challenged the anticipatory bail, after which the Supreme Court had issued notice to Ms. Singh.

Commissioner Kumar told reporters that the police had issued three notices to Ms. Singh and that the anticipatory bail had been challenged because she was “not cooperating” with the investigator. He said the police included allegations by Sharma’s family that Ms. Singh made several phone calls to influential people and judicial authorities after the woman’s death.

“We have registered the FIR within two days, so we have taken swift action in the matter. The remaining investigation is on from our end. The CBI investigation is a government-level matter,” he said, responding to questions about allegations of “lack of cooperation” by the local police.

Sharma, 33, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on the night of May 12. She married Mr. Singh on December 25 last year. Her family has made various allegations against Mr Singh and her mother, including allegations of mental harassment and financial demands.

While Mr. Singh has remained at large since the registration of an FIR in the case on May 15, the case took an ugly turn after his mother claimed in front of the media that Sharma was suffering from mental illness, was taking medication given to schizophrenic patients and was addicted to contraband substances like marijuana.
