Ministers N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna and CTR Nirmal Kumar with CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam.

The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) plans to hold a second meeting with its post-poll alliance partners in Chennai on September 9, a day after the ongoing budget session of the Assembly ends, to discuss formalizing the current arrangement as a political alliance.

The first meeting of TVK’s partners after the vote was held at a private hotel in Chennai on 1 July. Apart from the two Left parties, top leaders of all other TVK partners after the vote, including Congress, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and Viduthalai (ChefVCK) with TV President Joseph Katchi and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi led the Vijay discussion.

During the first round of discussions, it was decided to work on creating a coordination committee to manage the formation, propose a common minimum program and decide on the name of the formation during the second meeting. In this context, TVK plans to hold a second meeting with its partners after the vote on September 9. Mr. Vijay is expected to attend this meeting and hold a discussion with the leaders of the post-election allies. TVK started addressing the leaders of friendly parties on Friday.

TVK General Secretary and Water Resources Minister N. Anand along with other senior party leaders and ministers including Aadhav Arjuna, CTR Nirmal Kumar and Rajmohan met CPI(M) State Secretary P. Shanmugam, CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian and MDMK General Secretary Vaiko to extend the formal invitation.

Mr Kumar said it was a courtesy visit from Mr Shanmugam. The ministers also deplored the controversial circulars issued by the Guziliamparai Tahsildar seeking details of CPI and CPI(M) members and the higher education ministry to prevent student protests. The Law Minister said the circulars were issued without intimation to the government.

Mr. Veerapandian said the ministers met CPI leaders on the future course of Left parties in Tamil Nadu politics. He said the Left parties have called a joint coordination committee meeting on Saturday and the CPI has called intra-party meetings at various levels to decide on inviting TVK. He said his party was firm that he would not be part of the cabinet.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko said that his party will attend the meeting called by the TVK on September 9. He also welcomed the live broadcast of the parliamentary proceedings, claiming that it strengthens democracy.
