A section of the cadre of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) blew the whistle, the party’s election symbol, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an official function at the IIT-Madras campus on Sunday.

The cadre, seated in the last row, erupted in cheers and whistles whenever Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s name was mentioned. They continued to display even as Mr. Modi spoke. They blew whistles and held banners and placards with photographs of Mr. Vijay and slogans calling him the “next prime minister”.

Since they caused a stir with their actions, the police asked them to behave themselves. The cadre calmed down for a while, but later resumed activity.
