After the state government took over the SRM Hotel in Tiruchi, it became one of the most luxurious and highly regarded hotels of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC).
The prime property, located on Race Course Road, has been brought under the administrative control of TTDC, which operates 54 hotels in various parts of the state, including Mahabalipuram, Chennai, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Tiruchi, Madurai and Rameswaram. The TTDC comes as SRM Hotels Pvt Ltd’s 30-year lease period has expired and a six-week deadline given by the Supreme Court to the SRM management to pay ₹20 crore to the state government.
According to sources, the then AIADMK government granted 4.7 acres of land to the SRM leadership on lease for a high class hotel primarily to provide good accommodation to the foreign delegates who attended the World Tamil Conference held in Thanjavur in 1995.
The hotel has 100 rooms, 17 villas, a presidential suite, three restaurants, a swimming pool, three banquet halls, a meeting room and a bar. The room rate ranges from ₹ 6,000 to ₹ 17,000. Shortly after taking control of the hotel, TTDC renamed it Hotel Tamil Nadu Unit II. It has plates stuck on the glass door and TTDC decals stuck on it. It replaced the systems with HMIS software, which is widely used in hotels run by TTDC.
According to sources, no other TTDC hotel charges such high tariffs. Next on the list is Hotel Tamil Nadu in Mahabalipuram. The maximum rent for a sea view room is around ₹9000. No other TTDC hotels have a pool except their new entrant.
R. Venkatesan, deputy business manager of TTDC hotels, told The Hindu that the hotel will be marketed as Hotel Tamil Nadu-unit II. However, there would be no change in the tariff. All the services offered by the previous management would be offered.
