According to an American geological survey on Wednesday, there was a strong earthquake with a size of 7.3 hit the coast of Alaska on Wednesday, which led to a warning against the tsunami, which was later abolished.
The earthquake occurred around 12:37 local time (2037 GMT), with its epicenter located about 54 miles (87 kilometers) south of Sand Point island. According to the AFP report, a relatively shallow depth of 12.5 million was created.
Tsunami warnings were canceled
The authorities originally issued a warning against the Tsunami for South Alaska and the Alaskan Peninsula after the earthquake, but later reduced it to the tsunami Advisory and then pulled it completely.
“Counseling for Tsunami is canceled for the coastal areas of South Alaska and the Alaskan Peninsula,” said the National Warning Center Tsunami (NTWC) in a report published about two hours after the earthquake, AFP reported.
The initial earthquake was followed by a cluster of more than a dozen of shocks, the largest of which was measured at 5.2 size, according to USGS.
Tsunami warnings and counseling were released only for areas along the Alaskan coast, while the areas were further influenced, NTWC said.
At the sand point it was observed tsunami with a maximum height of 0.2 feet (6.1 centimeters).
However, the center recommended residents of the affected zone to be aware of the risks.
“Do not repeat the hazard zones until local emergency officials mean it’s safe,” NTWC said.
In March 1964, the state experienced a massive earthquake of 9.2 Magnitude-more recorded in North America. The earthquake launched a tsunami, which caused extensive destruction in Anchorage and influenced the areas, including the Gulf of Alasen, the West coast of the US and Havai, resulting in numerous deaths and more than $ 400 million owned.
Recently, in July 2023, an earthquake hit 7.2 Magnitude near the Alaska Peninsula, although it did not cause any significant damage.
