Several agricultural channels in the Truvallur district, covering more than 1600 hectares of agricultural land, were forced and cleaned from shrubs as part of the monsoon readiness.
“Work is engaged in nearly 150 km of channels, which mostly cover agricultural land and are susceptible to floods. Currently, working in seven places is underway and as soon as these sections are completed, we will start participating in several other places,” said the district collector M. Prathap.
The District Administration uses the services of large construction companies that participate in the laying of roads in Truvallur. L&T, TATA and SPK donated their equipment, including country and operators, he added.
The official involved in the clearing of shrubs said that more than 20 km of channels have been cleaned in the Minjur and Uhukottai blocks. Cleaning is channels that carry water for waterpoints such as POONDI tank, as well as channels carrying water to the Gulf of Bengal.
“Some of these villages can only be achieved through six to seven villages along the canals. This cleaning operation ensures that water reaches every field, including those at the end.
The channels are relatively wide (more than 5 m) and deep (over 10 ft) and therefore cannot be reset manually. “We need such heavy machines because very large shrubs are growing inside. The device also helps to strengthen bundles because the excess country is located outside the channels,” she explained.
Floods of agricultural land is the main problem during rains for farmers in the district of Tirvallur. “It is good that the district administration makes efforts to improve the channels. It is even more important that the locals take steps to ensure that the ground does not slip back in. Palm seed planting is a good choice. Nearby of Uhukottai.
Another farmer said, “There were times when we would plant seedlings that are younger than 20 days, and the fields would be flooded. Then we would release the land and fresh seedlings of the plants just to be flooded in the next round of rain.
