Trump’s tariffs on Greenland facing a roadblock? Senate Democrats to file legal challenge, Chuck Schumer says | Today’s news

January 18, 2026

Donald Trump’s additional tariffs on European allies over Greenland will see a backlash in the Senate, with Democrats poised to block the new measure.

Democratic opposition to Trump’s announcement of tariffs on eight European nations was announced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who accused the US president of heaping misery on the US economy.

“Donald Trump’s foolish tariffs have already driven up prices and hurt our economy, and now he’s only making things worse,” Schumer said, according to The Hill.

“It is unbelievable that he wants to double down on stupidity by imposing tariffs on our closest allies for his quixotic bid to take over Greenland,” added the former Democratic leader.

Schumer went on to specify that Senate Democrats would legally block the move, saying lawmakers would “introduce legislation to block these tariffs before they cause further damage to the American economy and our allies in Europe.”
