Hours after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz was open to commercial vessels, US President Donald Trump said on Friday (local time) that the Islamic Republic had agreed to never close it again.
In a post, Truth Social wrote: “Iran has agreed to never close the Strait of Hormuz again. It will no longer be used as a weapon against the World!”
Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz
His remarks came shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the opening of the Strait of Hormuz on X. Araghchi wrote: “In accordance with the cease-fire in Lebanon, passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared fully open for the remaining period of the cease-fire, on a coordinated route, as already announced by the Organization of Ports and Maritime Islam of Iran.”
However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that the passage was only open to commercial vessels and that they would have to coordinate with Iran and the IRGC. Additionally, Araghchi clarified that the strait was open for the remainder of the 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but key waterway, has been effectively closed since the start of the conflict, which began in late February in retaliation for the US and Israel attacking Tehran and targeting its key military and naval forces, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for transporting almost 20 percent of the world’s oil. It was shut down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes that sent shockwaves around the world, a move that even rocked global energy markets. As a result, oil prices jumped to $120 a barrel before retreating later in March.
Trump says the naval blockade will remain in place
Trump announced earlier today that the naval blockade would remain in place and in “full force” despite Tehran agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels. In a Truth Social post, he wrote: “The Strait of Hormuz is fully open and ready for business and full passage, but the naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it only applies to Iran until our transaction with Iran is 100% complete. This process should go very quickly as most points are already negotiated.”
Trump announced the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on April 12, hours after it was announced that Washington and Tehran had failed.
Trump said Iran had agreed to hand over enriched uranium
In another post, Trump claimed that the Islamic Republic had agreed to hand over its enriched uranium. He wrote: “The US will get all the nuclear ‘dust’ created by our great B2 bombers – no money will change hands in any way, shape or form.”
According to the AP, nuclear dust is an acronym Trump often uses to refer to highly enriched uranium believed to be buried under nuclear sites the US bombed during the 2025 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
If confirmed, it would represent a significant concession by Iran and secure one of Washington’s key demands for an end to the conflict. However, neither Tehran nor any mediating country indicated that such an agreement had been reached.
