US President Donald Trump said Iran was “talking to us” and hinted at the possibility of a deal that would avoid military conflict, even as tensions rise over Tehran’s violent crackdown on protests and a growing military presence in the region.
“They’re negotiating, so we’ll see what happens … there’s a big fleet headed there,” Trump told Fox News, highlighting the presence of a naval battle group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln off Iran’s coast.
Pressed on whether he had decided to strike, Trump refused to rule it out, saying: “I certainly can’t tell you that,” but added: “I hope they’ll negotiate something that’s acceptable.
Trump also said the U.S. was keeping details of any military options, including from some regional allies, to maintain strategic flexibility.
Marine buildup increases pressure
Washington’s deployment of naval forces, including aircraft carriers and destroyers, to the Middle East has raised concerns about a possible clash with Iran. The buildup follows Trump’s repeated threats to use force unless Tehran ends its deadly crackdown on anti-government protests.
Despite the military stance, Trump has expressed hope that the talks can avert conflict and noted Iran’s willingness to engage.
“We hope that we will come to an agreement … If not, we will find out whether he was right or not,” Trump said in response to the warning from Tehran’s leadership.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Warns of ‘Regional War’
In response to the growing rhetoric, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a stark warning that any US attack would spark a wider conflict in the Middle East.
“The Americans should know that if they start a war, this time it will be a regional war,” Khamenei said, according to Iranian state media.
Khamenei emphasized that Iran is not seeking war, but will respond strongly if attacked.
“We are not the initiators and we do not want to attack any country, but the Iranian nation will strike a strong blow against anyone who attacks and harasses it,” he added.
