US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Jan 21, 2026) reiterated his claim that he had stopped the war between India and Pakistan, as he had done with many other wars.
In a special speech in Davos, Switzerland, at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, Mr Trump also said the US needed Greenland, which he said was not a landmass but a huge chunk of ice, for strategic reasons because it lies between the US, China and Russia, not because of the huge amount of rare earth minerals buried under the ice.
He opened his speech by greeting “so many friends present” and “a few enemies” and took a hard line at Europe, NATO, clean energy advocates and past US presidents, including a “sleepy” Joe Biden.
Mr Trump has previously called for an end to the India-Pakistan conflict more than 80 times since May 10 last year, when he announced on social media that the two neighbors had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire following talks brokered by Washington.
India has consistently denied any third party intervention.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile attacks.
India has consistently maintained that the cessation of hostilities agreement with Pakistan was reached after direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two sides.
