US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday (September 3) that he had ordered India secondary sanctions for the purchase of Russian oil and warned against further steps, suggesting that the “second phase” and “third phases” were still on the table.
During a meeting with the Polish president in the oval office Trump he visibly irritated when the Polish journalist proposed that he expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but did not bring any steps.
“How do you know there is no action? Would you say that introducing secondary sanctions on India, the largest buyers outside China, are almost the same, would you say there was no measures?
He added sharply, “But when you say there is no action, I think you should get a new job.”
Warning to India
Trump stressed that India was warned weeks earlier.
“Two weeks ago, I said that if India buys, India has big problems, and that happens. So don’t tell me about it,” he said.
The President also combined his wider strategy with Moscow and its allies and said, “I have done it with regard to India and do it with other things.”
Stored heavy tariffs
Trump has already slapped 25% reciprocal tariffs in India, along with another 25% reward, which specifically focused on purchasing Russian oil in Delhi. The combined 50% tariff package came into force on August 27.
PM modi hits back
Prime Minister Narendra Modi firmly replied and stressed that India’s home priorities would not be at risk.
“I cannot compromise the interests of farmers, cattle citizens, small industry. The pressure may increase on us, but we will carry it,” PM Modi said.
