US President Donald Trump is hosting the newly elected mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, in the Oval Office today.
The meeting between the two leaders, who have targeted each other, is taking place for the first time since the Democratic Socialist was elected on November 4.
Trump called Mamdani a “100% communist nutcase,” a Jew-hater and a “total lunatic.” While Mamdani called the Trump administration “authoritarian” and described himself as “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare”.
In his victory speech, a direct message to Trump, Mamdani said, “Because I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn up the volume.”
The meeting will be an opportunity for both leaders to establish good working relations. However, Trump’s meeting in the Oval Office was wildly unpredictable, so it remains to be seen how the meeting will play out.
Mamdani, who will be sworn in as mayor on Jan. 1, said being a New Yorker means being prepared for all situations.
Mamdani previously said he and Trump had “a lot of disagreements.” But he would strive for all the journeys and encounters that can make our city accessible.
“It says a lot that a communist is coming to the White House, because that’s who the Democratic Party elected mayor of the largest city in the country,” said spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt.
