US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will “help” New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani because he wants the city to succeed.
Trump made the remarks during a speech in Miami on the anniversary of his re-election to a second term, a day after key polls in New York, Virginia and New Jersey.
“We’re going to see how the communist in New York is doing. We’re going to help him. We want New York to be successful. Maybe we’ll help him a little bit,” Trump said.
Just hours before Trump’s speech, Mamdani expressed his willingness to talk to the president or anyone about things that could benefit the people, even if the White House did not reach out to him.
In a hotly contested election ahead of next year’s midterm polls to decide control of Congress, Mamdani won the NYC mayoral race, defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, signaling a shift in the country’s political mood.
“Lost Sovereignty in New York”
Referring to Mamdani’s victory, Trump said that on Nov. 5 of last year, the American people regained their government and restored sovereignty, adding, “We lost a little bit of ‘sovereignty’ last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it.”
Trump added that Americans saved the economy, won freedom and saved the country on that wonderful night 365 days ago.
“The choice facing all Americans could not be clearer – we have a choice between communism and common sense,” he said.
Trump went on to claim that their opponents were offering an economic nightmare while they were offering an economic miracle. “They put America last, we put America first,” Trump remarked.
‘I’m not a bad person’
Trump has said he is not a bad person and wants a country that is great again. “Today we are gathered for the one-year anniversary of the single most important election victory. I am a very humble person.”
Mamdani’s challenge to Trump
Addressing supporters in NYC after his victory, Mamdani directly challenged Trump, saying, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it’s the city that gave birth to him.
“Donald Trump, because I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn up the volume,” Mamdani said.
The Democrat told New Yorkers they gave a mandate for change, for a new kind of politics, for a city they can afford and a mandate for a government that can do just that.
