US President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi from her post on Thursday (April 2), Reuters quoted White House officials as saying, marking a major shakeup in the administration’s top law enforcement leadership.
The decision follows growing frustration with Bondi’s performance, particularly her handling of sensitive investigative files related to Jeffrey Epstein.
The tenure is dominated by the controversy over Epstein’s writings
Repeated criticism of the handling of Epstein-related files became a defining issue during Bondi’s tenure in office.
She faced charges of mismanaging or withholding key records related to the Justice Department’s investigation into Epstein, a financier known for his connections to the powerful and influential.
The controversy has fueled a political backlash, including from Trump allies and some Republican lawmakers, and reignited scrutiny of Trump’s previous relationship with Epstein — which the president says ended decades ago.
Prosecution Pressure and Justice Department Strategy
In addition to the Epstein files controversy, Trump was reportedly frustrated with Bondi for what he saw as a lack of urgency in prosecuting political opponents.
Congressional control
The controversy surrounding Epstein’s writings intensified after the limited initial release of the documents fell short of expectations.
Although the Justice Department and FBI later declared the case closed, pressure from both sides grew, leading to legislation requiring broader release of the records.
Even after the release of millions of pages of documents, criticism remained about the redactions and the disclosure of the identities of some of the victims.
The Republican-led House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Bondi, and she was scheduled to testify before lawmakers on April 14.
Recent leadership shake-ups
Bondi is the second senior official to be sacked in recent weeks. Trump previously ousted Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary after criticism of her handling of the agency and the administration’s immigration agenda.
The back-to-back departures highlight lingering tensions within the administration over policy implementation and leadership performance.
Trump confirms Pam Bondi’s departure
Trump confirmed that Pam Bondi is leaving her current role in public and announced her move to an as-yet-undisclosed position in the private sector. A statement released on his social media platform Truth Social framed her departure positively and praised her record.
In his post, Trump highlighted Bondi’s work in law enforcement and public safety initiatives, crediting her with reducing violent crime. “Pam has done a tremendous job overseeing a massive crackdown on crime across our country, with homicides down to their lowest level since 1900,” he wrote.
Trump emphasized her role in what he characterized as a successful national effort to improve public safety.
Trump described Bondi as a “great American patriot and loyal friend,” underscoring the personal and professional relationship between the two. He added that he “will be transitioning to a much-needed and important new job in the private sector”, although no further details were provided on the nature of the role or the organization involved.
