US President Donald Trump suddenly removed Billy Long, a former auctioneer and Republican Congressman, who was confirmed less than two months ago as the head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Trump’s administration said on Friday.
Billy Long will no longer serve as the head of the tax agency. Finance Minister Scott Bessnt will supervise the agency as the reigning commissioner of IRS, reported the New York Times.
It was not immediately clear why he was released for a long time. His rapid departure makes him the shortest maintained Commissioner IRS, who confirmed the Senate since the position was created in 1862.
Who is Billy Dlouhý?
Billy Long is a former Missouri Congressman. While in Congress, where Billy Long served from 2011 to 2023, the legislation has long sponsored to get rid of IRS.
Former auctioneer and real estate broker, Long has no background in the tax administration. According to his biography on the agency’s website, he also hosted a radio show from 1999 to 2006 “on which IRS has always been a hot topic”.
After leaving Congress to mount the unsuccessful offer of 2022 for the US Senate, he long worked with a company that distributed a pandemic tax credit, said. This tax credit program was finally closed after the then Commissioner IRS Daniel Werfel found it fraudulent.
Long wrote on the social media that he would be nominated to become the next American ambassador to Iceland. “It is an honor to serve my friend President Trump and I am excited to take over my new role as Ambassador to Iceland,” Long wrote. “I am excited that I can answer his call for service and undertaken to develop his courageous agenda deeply. The exciting times ahead,” he added.
Why was he fired?
Long’s departure comes after the agency underwent a number of cuts related to DOGE this year.
Long, who had a small background in tax policy before supporting a tax credit, sometimes clashed by the Minister of Finance Scott Bessnt during his brief possession, the New York Times sources said.
Reportedly he made significant mistakes, at one point last month last month told tax practices that the versatile feeding season of the agency would start at the end of next year, the statement that IRS later said it was premature.
