US President Donald Trump has delayed a planned increase in tariffs on upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets and sinks, slowing the introduction of the levies due to growing voter dissatisfaction with rising prices, according to Bloomberg.
The White House released an overview of the president’s announcement late Wednesday while Trump hosted a New Year’s Eve party at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida.
“The higher tariffs were due to take effect on Thursday but are now set to take effect on January 1, 2027,” the fact sheet said.
According to the September proclamation, Trump initially ordered tariffs on “certain upholstered wood products” to rise to 30% from 25% on Jan. 1, while tariffs on kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures would rise to 50% from 25%. His statement on Wednesday delayed the move and the existing 25% tariff remains in place, the White House said.
The U.S. “continues to engage in productive discussions with trading partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products,” according to the fact sheet, suggesting the talks may yield pacts to further delay the new tariffs.
