US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the creation of a “peace panel” in Gaza, a key element of the second phase of the US plan to end the war in the Palestinian territories.
“It is my great honor to announce that the COUNCIL OF PEACE has been created. The members of the council will be announced soon, but I can say with certainty that this is the largest and most prestigious council ever assembled at any time, anywhere. Thank you for your attention to this matter!,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Trump proposed the Peace Council last year as an interim governing body overseeing the reconstruction of Gaza and overseeing a technocratic panel of Palestinian leaders.
The board is expected to include international figures, including representation from Arab states, and Trump has lined up as its chairman.
Trump previously said former British Prime Minister Tony Blair would be on the panel, but the British leader withdrew from the project amid criticism.
The council itself faced opposition because it appeared to impose foreign leadership on Gaza without planning for an independent Palestinian state.
