The Tripura Police on Sunday denied permission to the Tipra Motha Youth Front to hold a “massive” rally in Agartala planned for November 7. The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), which was gearing up for the event as a “show of strength” across the state, is yet to react to the decision.
In a letter to the YTF, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sadar (Agartala) said that half of the venue, the Vivekananda Mini Stadium, is currently occupied by an international exhibition and that allowing the rally in the remaining space could lead to severe congestion.
The letter goes on to say that “situations such as a stampede may occur if there is a mass gathering,” with the added risk of damage to Expo-related property. The denial of the permit was made in the interest of public safety, particularly to prevent harm to “men, women and children” and to avoid a “chaotic situation”.
Sources said intelligence inputs from various agencies and ground assessment by the state police prompted senior officials to take the decision. The recent incidents of violence in Takarjal, Jampuijal, Sidhai, Khowai and Santirbazar, allegedly involving Tipra Moth supporters, were also reviewed at the highest levels of the government before the order was issued.
Former minister and Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman had earlier urged the state government to deny permission for the rally, citing tensions in certain areas and Tipra Moth’s “contentious demands” which he said were “harming harmony in society”.
