The Tripura Bar Association, the apex body of lawyers in the state, on Monday (January 19, 2026) set a deadline for the recall of West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Chairman Gautam Sarkar, who was accused of misbehaving with lawyers while intoxicated.
Mr. Sarkar is a retired District Judge and Magistrate.
The lawyers demanded that Mr Sarkar be sacked within three days and said they would boycott the consumer court until action was taken. Bar officials said they would discuss the requirements with the Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs.
“The bar is unanimous in passing a resolution to remove Gautam Sarkar within three days. We have also decided to boycott the consumer court until the government appoints a new president,” senior advocate Pijush Biswas announced after the meeting.
He said he would try to meet the minister concerned this evening and seek his intervention.
Mr. Biswas and other lawyers alleged that Mr. Sarkar was embroiled in serious controversies during his tenure in the judiciary. They claimed that he was often drunk and committed acts contrary to his character.
