Trinamool leader Jay Prakash Majumdar arrested for illegally occupying a house during the year
The Bidhannagar city police on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) arrested prominent Trinamool Congress leader Jay Prakash Majumdar for allegedly harassing a woman and illegally occupying her house since 2015.
Officials from the Bidhannagar (North) police station said Mr. Majumdar had entered the property as a tenant about 12 years ago, but subsequently stopped paying the rent and continued to occupy the house.
“He also put a big lock for years and banned Srimoyee Mukherjee’s wife and her daughter Arati Roy Chowdhury from entering the premises. He had huge political influence in the area and that’s why the victims also didn’t say anything. The TMC leader refuses to vacate the premises despite repeated requests,” the officer said.
On Wednesday (June 3, 2026) morning, Mr. Majumdar came to visit the house when Mrs. Roy Chowdhury stopped him. Later, Mr. Majumdar also had an argument with her and pushed her out of the house, after which locals gathered in the area and started beating him up.
The police immediately arrived at the scene and arrested him. “In the evening, Ms. Roy Chowdhury also filed an FIR at the police station under Sections 329 (4), 308 (2), 115 (2), 74, 318 (4) of the BNS, after which we formally arrested him,” he added.
Mr Majumdar, the current Trinamool Congress state vice-president, joined the party in 2022 after being suspended from the BJP for publicly criticizing the party for their defeat in the 2021 assembly elections.
His arrest also comes amid an ongoing crackdown on TMC leaders across the state. Since the BJP government came to power, more than hundreds of leaders, including legislators and councilors, have been arrested, mostly on various charges of corruption.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation Ward No. 36 Councilor Arjit Das Thakur was arrested on Wednesday (June 3, 2026) just a day after the second. 106 by Sachin Singh on Tuesday (June 2, 2026).
Earlier, police also arrested Kalna MLA Debo Prasad Bag, Bishnupur MLA Dilip Mondal, Purbasthali North MLA Tapan Chattopadhyay, former Burdwan South MLA Khokon Das, former Chinsurah MLA Asit Mazumder and also several councilors including Sudip Polley of Ward No. 123 in KMC.
Meanwhile, the police also filed an FIR against TMC leader Debashish Banerjee and another person Paritosh Dutta after two suitcases containing termite-infested cash and a firearm were found in the union room of Surendranath College.
