Mr. Roy was one of the dissenting voices in the Trinamool Congress and distanced himself from the party after the 2026 assembly election debacle. Highlighting several issues like corruption in the party, the 77-year-old Trinamool leader said there was no introspection in the party after the loss.

Mr. Roy’s resignation brings to the fore differences among Trinamool Congress MPs. There is speculation that more MPs may quit the Trinamool Congress. A newly elected Rajya Sabha MP can also leave the party.

The party is also facing a rebellion in its legislature where about 60 MLAs are electing a new leader of opposition.

“The legislatures also probably did not have the confidence that the party was running in the right direction. There was no forum in the party to discuss political and other social issues,” he told the media in Delhi.

After the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, Mr. Roy criticized the party. “I’ve been on the sidelines for a long time, taking part in anti-crime protests,” he said.

A former Congress leader who was close to former President Late Pranab Mukherjee, Mr Roy served in the Rajya Sabha from 2011 and also remained Chief Whip till 2024 and Deputy Leader till 2019.
