The 102nd death anniversary of freedom fighter and ‘Manyam Veerudu’ Alluri Sitharam Raju was marked with ceremonies in Visakhapatnam and Alluri Sitharam Raju (ASR) districts on Thursday, with officials, political leaders and civil society organizations paying tributes to the tribal revolutionary.
In Paderu, Joint Collector Tirumani Sri Pooja led the tributes at the Collectorate, garlanded Alluri’s portrait in the conference hall and floral tributes at his statue on the premises. She said his courage and sacrifice remained a constant source of inspiration for today’s youth and urged every citizen to contribute in his spirit to national development. District Finance Officer (AFC) MVS Lokeswararao, KRRC Special Deputy Collector B. Neelakantarao and officials from various departments attended. At the ITDA office, Project Manager Aditya Varma decorated Alluri’s statue and urged everyone to rededicate themselves to the tribal welfare and development of agency areas in line with Alluri’s vision.
The District Collector in Visakhapatnam celebrated the anniversary under the joint auspices of the Youth Services, Tourism and Culture Department. Tourism Officer Madhavi, CEO SETVIS Ramya, Collectorate AO BV Rani and district level officers paid floral tributes and remembered Alluri’s sacrifices for independence and his struggle for tribal rights. At the Zilla Parishad conference hall, District Panchayat Raj CEO P. Narayanamurthy and APPRMEA District President SB Sattibabu decorated Alluri’s portrait and paid tributes, with the CEO noting that Alluri’s struggle will remain an indelible chapter in the nation’s history.
Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat visited Alluri Sitharam Raju’s statue at Pandrangi village in Padmanabham Mandal of Bhimili constituency, the birthplace of the freedom fighter, and paid floral tributes. He described Alluri as a fearless warrior who mobilized tribal communities from the Agency’s territories towards the freedom movement and became an enduring symbol of courage and patriotism.
Addressing party cadres near Alluri’s statue on Beach Road, CPI state secretariat member JV Satyanarayana Murthy recalled that Alluri had organized a long armed resistance against British forces to defend tribal rights before he was captured near Chintapalli and executed. He expressed concern over what he described as anti-people policies of the Union government affecting tribal lands and the Visakhapatnam steel plant.
Alluri Seetharama Raju Vignana Kendram organized a memorial meeting with Trust Chairman Ch Narsinga Rao and former Principal of Pendurthi Polytechnic N. Chandrasekhara exhorting the youth to imbibe Alluri’s spirit of sacrifice. Alluri Committee In-charge GS Rajeswarao announced the opening of the buttermilk distribution center which will function from 11 am to 1 pm every month and will serve around 2,500 people on the opening day.
Speaking at the Beach Road programme, BJP Andhra Pradesh state president PVN Madhav described Alluri as a “flame of revolution that will never die” and said his party has been conducting a “Spurthi Yatra” for 20 years to make places associated with Alluri national heritage centres.
