Sixty tribal families from Nilambur here since May 20, it is an agitation in front of collectors who demand land for them as provided by the government.
Agitation is in the continuation of 314-day hunger, which in the years 2023-24 organized in front of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) in Nilambur. This strike was terminated on 18 March 2024 after the soil assurance by the district collector of VR Vinodem.
The collector assured them in writing that each of them will be given 50 cents of land within six months. Despite repeated reminders and laws of tribal families, however, the district administration could not maintain its word.
Bindu Vailassery, the leader of the tribal families sitting in the dharana in front of the collector, said they approached the collector several times, but without success. “We met a collector on May 20 to push the demand. But he was looking for another three months, just as before. It’s been 15 months since he gave us confidence.
Human rights activist “Grow” Vasu, who is the Council for the Council for the Council of Agitation, said the government cheats the tribal families by extending data on behalf of the technicians.
District collector VR Vinod did not participate in repeated calls for his comments. He didn’t even call back.
However, the District Administration officials stated that the promised land could not be handed over in time. They said that bypassing these technical problems would be time consuming.
Some other sources in the gatherer indicated that the delay was caused by political interventions of the leaders of the ruling democratic front (LDF).
Meanwhile, tribal leaders claimed that they would not stop agitation without gaining the promised land. “There are no big or gifts. It’s our right,” Mrs. Vailassery said.
