Activists and the public have raised complaints of unauthorized felling of trees worth several crores of rupees in the Devakottai Government Hospital (GH) premises.
On average, more than 500 people visit the government hospital on an outpatient basis every day. There were many mature trees in the hospital premises including Neem, Vaagai, Jackfruit and Ashoka varieties.
In addition to providing shade to the visiting public during sunny days, the trees helped to moderate the effects of the heat from the sweltering summer.
On Friday (June 12, 2026), trees worth several crores of rupees were suddenly felled there without permission.
Subsequently, there were attempts to clean them and take them away. When activist Suresh came to know about it, he lodged a complaint with the district administration.
It’s not the first time: Question
Officials of the Finance Department headed by Tahsildar Thangamani who reached the spot stopped the sale of the pieces of wood. They subsequently conducted an investigation into the unauthorized felling.
Further, investigation revealed that trees worth several crores of rupees which were there earlier were also cut down and sold.
On this, Mr. Suresh said, “Three months ago, some trees were cut and sold. Even though a complaint was filed at that time, no action was taken. In this situation, they started cutting trees again a few days ago. I informed the revenue department officials then. But they ignored it. After complaining to the higher officials, they stopped the sale of the cut pieces of wood.”
“Investigation must be done and action must be taken regarding the felling of the old trees which were beneficial to the patients,” he added.
When asked by the officials of the revenue office, they replied, “To cut down trees in government office premises, one needs to obtain permission from the Collector. On questioning the hospital management, they said that they cut them unknowingly. Following this, we are taking steps to officially auction the cut pieces of wood.”
