In the modern T20 environment, where coaching manuals are full of data and tactical complexity, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma thrive on a remarkably primitive philosophy. That philosophy laid the foundation stone for their record chase against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026 at the Wankhede on Wednesday night.
Facing a daunting chase of 245 runs against Mumbai Indians, Travishek created Powerplay for the ages. They scored 92 runs in the first six overs, eventually putting together 129 runs in just 8.4 overs. Even the gold standard of the league, Jasprit Bumrah, was not spared as the pair effectively ended the match before the halfway mark of the innings.
The win was SRH’s fifth on the bounce, a streak fueled by ruthless starts from the veteran Australian and the young Indian left-hander. Since their first pairing in 2024, they have amassed 1,639 runs at an average of 49.66. It is the most by an opening pair in the last three years of the IPL. This season alone, they lead the charts with 529 runs at a staggering average of 58.77.
‘SEE THE BALL, PICK UP THE BALL’
As fans and analysts search for deep tactical secrets, Abhishek Sharma revealed that their success is rooted in a mindset of uncomplicated aggression.
“I mean, I’m always trying to get something out of Head, but he’s just very quiet and mostly he likes to do it with the bat,” Abhishek said after the match. “But still, I think whenever I ask him anything, when he’s outscoring, he’s got one answer, just do what you pick up the ball and go for it. And that’s the philosophy I think we’ve used over the last few years is just pick up the ball and hit it.”
Abhishek’s view suggests a partnership built on instinctive response rather than over-analysis.
“Whenever you’re under pressure, just talk to the other partner, get a bit of confidence and then just do it. To be very honest, we always just congratulate each other on fifties and hundreds in a partnership. That means we just find out on the big screen and nothing else. We just watch the ball and react.”
THE SPIN SPECIALIST
If Abhishek looks up to Head’s unflappable temperament, the Australian equally admires his technical prowess, especially against the slower bowlers. While teams try to stifle Head with quick deliveries or defensive rotation, the southpaw simply passes the baton to his partner.
“I know if he spins, I’m just going to hit him,” Head said.
“I’ve probably never played with a better batsman. I think he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen in terms of hitting the ball against spin. Again in the Powerplay we saw teams start losing pace against us. So it’s about getting him on strike and watching him do his job.”
Head noted that the partnership thrives on a tacit understanding that removes the clutter of midfield debates.
“He puts teams under a lot of pressure. It’s a great partnership, we don’t have to talk too much.”
Combining Head’s class-leading ability to use the pace of the ball and Abhishek’s clean hitting against spin, SRH created the script for the opposition captains. Whether it’s a record power play or a Mumbai record, Travishek’s secret remains as effective as it is simple: track the ball, pick it up and hit it.
