The South Central Railway (SCR) has informed that normal train services have been resumed in the entire zone since Thursday morning following the Cylcone Montha rains.
Director Public Relations A. Sridhar said advanced planning, monsoon safety protocols, round-the-clock monitoring by top officials of various divisions with the help of dispatchers helped in dealing with the natural calamity – ensuring that only 5% or a little over 130 trains were disrupted out of the 700-odd services operated daily in the region.
Another seven services were canceled and 30 trains were diverted in the last two days due to waterlogging of tracks near Dornakal station between Kazipet-Vijaywada, while the upper track near Guntur station was affected. Railway staff stopped trains at stations before or at Dornakal and ensured that some passengers were sent home by RTC buses. Golconda Express was stopped at this junction.
Trains like Vande Bharat which got stuck at Khammam station and several other trains were taken back and diverted via Guntur and Nalgonda to Secunderabad. With the descending line near Guntur functional, officials were able to run trains using a single track until repairs were made in Andhra Pradesh. Due to schedule disruption, Vande Bharat (Train No. 20833) from Visakhapatnam started its journey at 10:00 AM instead of 5:45 AM and is scheduled to reach Secunderabad at around 8:30 PM.
A railway official explained that assistance services have been opened at all important stations to help passengers. The Monsoon Action Plan envisages continuous monitoring of vulnerable stretches, including mountain slopes, bridges and embankments near water bodies with the help of linemen and constant contact with state irrigation authorities to get information about water inflows.
