Train services on the Thrissur-Ernakulam route were affected after a diesel shunting locomotive experienced a technical snag which caused its wheel to get stuck on switches and a crossing zone in the track during shunting operations of a freight train at Kalamassery on Friday (November 28, 2025) afternoon.
According to railway sources, as a precautionary measure, train services on the adjacent main line were temporarily suspended and services were operated in both directions on one track. The operation on one line required additional time to ensure the safe passage of trains one after the other, resulting in several services being delayed. This caused trains to wait to clear in the afternoon rush hour.
Restoration work was carried out and both main lines were certified as fit for normal train service as of 17:45 after ensuring track and traffic safety. Normal train operations were resumed at 6.23 pm, a railway statement said.
Train services were resumed gradually, with priority given to long-distance passenger trains such as the Vande Bharat. Among the affected trains were Vande Bharat, Ernad Express, Guruvayur-Ernakulam passenger and Thiruvananthapuram-Indore weekly train. All trains were more than an hour late.
